The Lipstick Index

According to Stocking Up on Sin: How to Crush the Market with Vice-Based Investing, Estée Lauder has a market indicator they call a "lipstick index". The author quotes Lauder spokeswoman Sally Sussman as saying, "We definitely see a spike in lipstick sales when the rest of the retail climate is challenged. It's the small luxuries that do well is what we learned from the index. Lipstick offers an easy pick-me-up or splash of color in an otherwise dreary moment.... The bolder colors do very well during these times."
